Smarter Kinder
Become smarter about being kinder
At Core EQ we did what no other legal stakeholder has done. We actually conducted PhD level research into how lawyers learn to manage and lead at work. Based on this research we focus on the importance of kind and courageous work practices. And empowering you to create and sustain better experiences for yourself and for others. Kindness must be partnered with courage to thrive in the modern workplace.
Our Courageous LEADERWORK Model and Toolkit informs the mindful practice of noticing, recognising and appreciating what you and those around you do to foster better (fairer, safer) work & social practices & experiences. We have distilled international contemporary thinking and practice in leadership drawing on decades of practical consulting experience. And our PhD research.
The courageous leaderworker can identify harsh work activities that others initiate, either consciously or unconsciously, deliberately or accidentally. Often without consideration for the effect their actions are having on others. Whether these actions are the exercise of legitimate power or otherwise. However most people do not have the toolkit to protect themselves and their colleagues from this unacceptable behaviour.
To role model kindness and courage at work we offer horse facilitated sessions with our highly trained equine facilitators. By experiencing kindness and courage in a safe experiential learning environment you have the opportunity to reframe your own knowledge, beliefs and values about how you want to interact with others. And how you want them to interact with you.
We are launching The Courageous Leaderwork Project in 2025.
Gain valuable insights into the benefits to you and your workplace when you boost your Leaderwork skills. And also learn important self preservation skills to identify, protect yourself and respond to unsafe and unkind work behaviours. Then share your knowledge with others.
Smarter Kinder Legal Workplaces: What is happening?
Legal workplaces can be unsafe places to work especially for young women. In Victoria, Australia, legal organisations have the highest incidence of workplace gendered violence (includes sexual assault, bullying) of any industry. Legal professionals who are organisational and professional leaders are being asked to create and champion a change of approach. And to question whether the profession at large has an adequate handle on the problem.
Respect and Equality in the Legal Workplace
Core EQ is working as the leadership consultant on the Respect and Equality in the Legal Sector Project. This project is funded by Work Safe and hosted by the Women's Legal Service It is time to heal the legal profession. And to foster a kinder and courageous legal profession. Brave enough to face into the cultural change we require. Inertia and ignorance is a safety hazard. We can start by acknowledging that we don't know enough about it and how to change what is happening in our legal workplaces.
Legal Working Culture - Kind and Courageous Leaderwork and Kindful Leadership
Here is a start. Legal Working Culture benchmarks healthy workplace behaviours and provides a framework to understand the challenges and resistance to changing values, behaviours and beliefs. It incorporates both Professional Leadership and Organisational leadership. Importantly it acknowledges the invisible work, Leaderwork so many lawyers do to survive and thrive to overcome the safety hazards in a workplace alive with unhealthy power dynamics.
Leaderwork, by manifesting kindness, offers a way forward. The complimentary work of Kindful Leadership by Graham Allcott and his commitment to kind work cultures reinforces the relevance of Kind Leaderwork.
In recovering from my own lived experience of having my legal career abruptly ended I went in search of how to build safer workplaces. I had a thirst to find answers to how to thrive in workplaces that in my experience did not prioritise the safety and wellbeing of their people. I forged a new path gaining appointments to both federal and state administrative decision review bodies. As a senior member of the WorkCare Appeals Board I sat as one of 3 government appointed members including a medical practitioner and workers compensation expert. And gained invaluable insights into how a person injured at work was treated within a workers compensation system. As my career progressed I realised that there was a lack of robust research into how lawyers learn to manage and lead at work. This led to me conducting the first PhD level research in this field in Australia. Later I collaborated with quality management professionals to build an enterprise specific Operations Management Continuous Improvement Curriculum and related training and development resources. And led the introduction of Continuing Legal Professional Development in Victoria. Taking a leap of faith I bought my first horse, Rad and launched Core EQ to offer Equine Experiential workshops in work and life skills and to champion the benefits of appreciating and activating peoples' organisational building skills. Caring for and and working with my horses enables me to face into my lived work experiences. And to find the courage to communicate, connect, and together with other Leaderworkers, construct healthier streams of work practice. Thus contributing to safer workplaces. And reducing psychological hazards.
